school assignment

(Last updated 18-7-2024)

Dear Students,

Starting Tuesday, September 17th 2024, you will be participating in YOUCEE 2024. During the opening of YOUCEE 2024, we expect you to give a 5 to 10-minute presentation. In that presentation, you will introduce yourselves and your school, you will give an explanation of one war memorial, and you will tell us what experiences you expect to gain, or what you expect to learn during the week of the YOUCEE conference.

We expect your presentation to contain the following:
  • A video of your school and yourself (Official opening Tuesday evening): The video will be shown at the conference on Tuesday evening during the formal opening of the conference.  There will be official representatives from various governmental levels & organizations.  In your video use appropriate language and film respectively.
  • War memorial (Informal opening Tuesday morning): Present one war memorial that is related to Operation Market Garden. You can do so in your video/vlog or you may also exhibit your war memorial in a PowerPoint, Prezie or poster presentation.  If you choose to present your war memorial in video format, the war memorial video can not be part of your introductory video, so you will have two videos in total.
  • Expectations (Informal opening Tuesday morning): Tell us what you expect to learn and what experiences you expect to gain.
As there will be schools from various European countries, the presentation and video must be in English!

You & Your school         (Official opening Tuesday evening)
Present your school to the other YOUCEE participants in a short vlog/video (maximum of 1,5 minutes). Give a good impression of your school; ideas can include taking your viewers on a tour of your school, an impression of a "regular" class day at your school or interviewing other students/ teachers to share their role/perspectives of your school.  However you choose to present your school, be as creative as you can.  Again, ensure that your video is appropriate in both language and content for dignitaries, students from other countries, teachers, government officials.
When presenting yourself, share why you have found it interesting to join the YOUCEE conference, what meaning it has to you (maybe there are personal or family reasons to join, international reasons, language development?) .

The War Memorial        (Informal opening Tuesday morning)
The Netherlands has over 3,900 war memorials. Some memorials pay tribute to a specific event or person. Others are rather in general memory of World War II. For your presentation, choose one war memorial from your own area/environment that Iis related to the airborne troops/battle of
Arnhem/Operation Market Garden. If you are a student joining the YOUCEE conference from a foreign country, choose then a war monument related to Airborne/The Battle of Arnhem you’re your own country. To get an idea of what we expect, you can watch the following two videos:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vhx3wM_w1I
www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcVqBaWmd3M&t=41s
On the following websites, you can find information on the various war memorials:
 www.4en5mei.nl/oorlogsmonumenten
www.tracesofwar.nl/

There is a lot of interesting information about war memorials. Possible points for attention for your presentation could be:
  • In memory of whom or what was this memorial built?
  • What is the story behind this memorial?
  • What does the memorial depict?
  • Why was this location chosen for the memorial?
  • Why are these specific victims or events commemorated?
  • Do the people who live in the neighbourhood know that this memorial is here?
  • How do people feel about the memorial?
  • Who created/designed the memorial?
  • What material was used to build the monument?

Tips and tricks for the vlog/video
We have some tips and tricks for your vlog/video. If you use a vlog/video for the memorial as well as for the presentation of your school, you can save the two in separate files. This may be handy given the size for transmission and for recording/editing the videos. It is a nice touch to present your video in a way that is personal and authentic. To tell the story yourselves. In the video, to 'take' the viewer to a location and inside your school.

A creative ending to the video makes sure that the viewers will continue to think about your
vlog/video for a while or even remember it. A good final sentence goes back to the attention-getter at the beginning of your video. We call this a "full-circle argument". This stylistic device brings the video full circle. Another stylistic device is to make a powerful statement, wish or final sentence.

Of course, you should make sure that you can be properly heard/understood in the vlog/video, and that there is no annoying background noise. Intelligibility can make or break your vlog/video. You can have the most beautiful images, and you can have the most convincing smile on camera, but if the sound is not right, your viewers will lose interest in no time at all. Mobile phones and most cameras are equipped with internal microphones. If you use those, make sure they are not accidentally covered. A separate microphone (for example those in the earphones/AirPods) will enhance intelligibility in various situations, and may be handy, for example for outdoor filming. In addition to sound, high-quality, steady images are also important and pleasant to watch. Finally, editing your video is an important part of the process. If you edit your video well, you can secure the viewer's attention. There are several programmes that you can use. Widely-used programmes are iMovie, Adobe Premiere Pro, and Final Cut. Know that editing is a matter of practice - after some time, you will see that you will get better and faster at it. If you don't want to reinvent the wheel yourself, you can find numerous instruction videos and training courses online. For a little more effect, you can use royalty-free background music and sound effects, for example
on freemusicarchive.org/ or  soundcloud.com/
When editing, make sure that your vlog/video is not too long. Focus on your aim and your key message. We expect the presentation of a war memorial and your expatations to be at least 5, but no more than 10, minutes.

Deadlines
  • We would like to learn from each school which memorial your school has selected as soon as possible, but not later than June 15th   2024, so as to make sure that every school chooses a different memorial. In this respect, the first to inform us will have the first choice of memorial.
  • Not later than two week before commencement of YOUCEE 2024, we will expect your vlog/video and possible (PowerPoint) presentation by email (or WeTransfer), so that we can put it on a laptop and make sure that it is ready to go. If you do a poster presentation, please send us a photograph of the poster or the digital poster in advance.
